Saint Bernard Dog Breed Information

The Saint Bernard was developed by the monks of the Hospice of St Bernard in the Swiss Alps to help rescue travelers lost in the mountains, especially during snowstorms.

This dog breed is said to be a cross between a native mountain Mastiff and a Danish Bulldog. There are two varieties, one rough and the other smooth coated.

These dogs were taken to England about 1860 where they soon became popular because of their great size and beauty.
